Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment Achieved Through Domestic Production of Injectable Hyaluronic Acid Powder

A Milestone in Iran’s Pharmaceutical Industry: Reducing Import Dependence and Opening Export Opportunities

One of the most significant pharmaceutical and aesthetic products, previously entirely imported, the hybrid injectable Hyalo Mesogel, is now produced domestically by an Iranian knowledge-based company that also successfully developed Iranian Botox. The product is ready for industrial-scale production.

This product is used not only for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis and certain eye conditions but also as a key ingredient in cosmetic mesogels and dermal fillers. Domestic production of this hyaluronic acid powder could prevent the outflow of approximately 200 billion IRR in foreign currency and pave the way for future exports of this essential ingredient.

Advanced Technology and Applications

According to the IRIB News Agency, the CEO of the knowledge-based company stated that the hybrid injectable Hyalo Mesogel is produced using advanced and specialized biopharmaceutical technology.

• Medical Applications:

  • Injectable treatments for knee osteoarthritis, helping prevent cartilage degradation.

  • Certain ophthalmic drugs.

• Cosmetic Applications:

  • Used as a main component in mesogels and dermal fillers.

Dr. Ali Faraji emphasized that all domestic demand for this product has historically been met through imports. He expressed optimism that Iran will soon achieve self-sufficiency, and exports of injectable hyaluronic acid powder will follow once domestic supply is secured.

Industrial Production and Scale

Morteza Jafaraghaei, Production Manager, highlighted the technological significance of this product:

• The powder is produced using microbial strains, a complex process in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

• This is the first time this product is produced in Iran and it is ready for industrial-scale distribution.

• Estimated annual demand is 100–150 kg, with each kilogram valued at 1.5 billion IRR, equating to 200 billion IRR in foreign currency savings if fully produced domestically.

He also noted the remarkable molecular property of the product, which allows it to absorb up to 1,000 times its own volume in water, enhancing its efficacy in medical and cosmetic applications.

Domestic Production: A Strategic Move

• The production of injectable hyaluronic acid powder strengthens Iran’s pharmaceutical self-sufficiency.

• Reduces dependency on imports, mitigating foreign currency outflow.

• Prepares the ground for future exports in the biopharmaceutical sector.

This achievement showcases the capabilities of Iranian knowledge-based companies in producing highly specialized biopharmaceutical ingredients and marks a turning point in the country’s pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
